Is Reggae and Dancehall the same?

Are Reggae and Dancehall The Same? -  This question might be up for debate but in Jamaica the birthplace of both genre, they are not.

Dancehall music is a sub-genre of Reggae music or should we say Reggae music is the mother of Dancehall music.

What is Reggae Music - This is a genre that is strongly associated with Jamaica, and that is because it was started there in the 1960's. Toots and the Maytals did 1968 single called "Do the Reggay."  Click here to read about  The Origin Of Reggae Music.

What is Dancehall Music - Dancehall music is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s.  Click here to read about the Origin of Dancehall Music.

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Beres Hammond, Jimmy Cliff and Luciano are all reggae artists. Their music is more about social commentary, love and unity and fighting for equal rights.

Vybz Kartel, Ninja Man, Shabba Ranks, Mavado, Super Cat are Dancehall artist. These artists music are mostly about money, hot girls and car.

Some of the main difference between Reggae and Dancehall are the lyrical contents and the beats/Riddims.
