Best Reggae Drummer of All Times

Best Reggae Drummer of All TimesCarlton Barrett

Who is the Best Reggae drummer of all time? is a question which has been floating around for some time now, with almost everyone voicing their own opinion.

We all by now might already know that Reggae music was originated in the late 1960s

There are lots of credible Reggae drummer who has blessed us with their talents, some are here with us, while some has passed.

The best Drummer by far is the late Carlton Barrett.

Carlton "Carly" Barrett was born December 17, 1950, he was not only a Jamaican Reggae music drummer, but he was also a very good percussionist.

Carlton started his musical career as a member of Lee "Scratch" Perry's house band called The Upsetters along with his brother Aston "Family Man" Barrett.

In 1970 both brothers joined the now world-renown Bob Marley and The Wailers band. He also co-wrote Bob Marley's song "War".

The world's renown One Drop Rhythm was popularized by Carlton Barrett, this is a percussive drumming style which was created by Winston Grennan.

But it was Carlton's Beats and which helped to propelled Reggae music internationally. Carlton Barrett was shot and killed outside his gate on April 17, 1987.

Other World renown Reggae Drummers are:

  • Style Scott
  • Sly Dunbar
  • Santa Davis
  • Lloyd Knibb
  • Leroy Wallace
  • Glen Washington
  • Winston Grennan
  • Nelson Miller
  • Drummie Zeb
  • Uziah Thompson
  • Steve Nisbet
  • Count Ossie
  • Paul Douglas and
  • Mortimer

The drums and bass are the foundation of reggae music.

They establish the tempo, the melody, and the beat of the music. The drums set down a steady tempo, which the bass works off of to create the melody.

Together, the bass and drums create the basic beat/groove for the song.
