Fair Trial for Vybz Kartel

Nearly 17 months into his incarceration, well-renowned Dancehall singer, Vybz Kartel is receiving a push on his behalf for a fair trial as fans are circulating a petition to secure the deejay’s release from prison.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer has bounced between lock-ups in Kingston and Spanish Town since his September 2011 arrest as he is awaiting his day in court on murder and conspiracy charges. Despite securing bail in two of his three court cases, Kartel remains in prison as he has yet to be offered bail in the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams murder case. As a result, the self-professed ‘Worl Boss’ will languish in the Horizon Remand Centre until May 27 when the matter will once again be mentioned.

However, Michael Dawson, the co-author of Kartel’s book, Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto has started a petition asking that Kartel be allowed temporary freedom and the chance to earn a decent living until his trial begins. Dawson has pushed the petition through Kartel’s official Twitter page as well as the official Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto website; garnering over 300 signatures in the process since its unveiling on February 18.

Kartel is charged with four other men in the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams as he stands accused of participating in the St. Catherine dancer’s murder following an alleged argument over missing illegal guns at a Havendale, St. Andrew residence in August 2011. He also faces conspiracy charges stemming from the Williams case as well as murder and gun-related charges in the shooting death of Barrington ‘Bossie’ Burton in July 2011.

He was granted bail in the Burton case in December 2011 before being offered bail in the conspiracy case last November.
