ZJ Liquid upset after deejay makes suicide threat to get song on air

Tuesday August 12, 2014, was a very eventful day at the headquarters of ZIP 103FM in Kingston after a man threatened to commit suicide at the Jamaican radio station if his song did not get played on the airwaves.

The deejay, 24-year-old Jyquan O’Brian, known by the moniker Ikon D Link, climbed the station’s transmission pole after being denied entry into the station as he tried to approach ZJ Liquid with his song titled Stress. As Liquid was on air doing his usual Throwback Tuesdays set Tuesday afternoon, O’Brian took the extraordinary measure after slipping past station security and saying he would jump if the song was not played.

When notified of the stunt, Liquid went outside where a crowd gathered as they watched the man perched on the pole. He then tried to reason with him about the situation.

"I went outside and spoke to him while he was up there and he was saying to me 'Mi rate you, yaa me DJ, me waa you play me song cause me a suffer and me youth dem hungry,'” Liquid told the Jamaica STAR in an interview published Wednesday. “He had a CD and he dropped it to me and I decided to listen it.”

Liquid, whose real name is Michael Brissett obliged, playing the song twice during his set after deeming it was clean enough to go on air, with O’Brian listening via his radio and cell phone. Despite playing the song out of presumed pity for the young man, however, the acclaimed disc jock gave a scathing assessment of Stress and warned other new artists not to try similar stunts again, but simply approach them in a professional way if they want their music played.

"I will not be playing it again, maybe if him do it over and do it properly, I might consider doing it,” he told the newspaper. “It never really mek it, honestly. It wasn't the best song. If he came with it under different circumstances, I would tell him to work on it.”

Liquid continued, "A stunt like that will never work again, unuh cyaah trick we fi play eediat song. We have to have standards and rules and we have a brand to uphold."

O’Brian was later removed from the pole by police and fire officials and reportedly taken into custody.
