Sean Paul Explains Leaving Atlantic Records

Sean Paul is now an independent artist after he and Atlanta Records cut ties this summer.

For weeks there were rumors that the label has dropped the dancehall star after a 12-year relationship went sour.

For the first time Sean Paul is opening up on the circumstances that lead to him leaving the label. Speaking with Billboard, SP says he felt like Atlantic staffs were too inexperience to work with.

“I am happy to be off of a label because I don’t want someone who at this point is way younger than me, has never written a song, performed on a stage or produced a riddim track, telling me they aren’t feeling my song so try again,” SP said.

“It is better that I feel what I want to release; if the public doesn’t want it, at least I know I put my best into it.”

Being an Indie artist will now allow the “Got 2 Luv U” deejay to have full control over how his music sound and what to release.

He has also negotiated a release term from VP Records but he could also still work with that label to distribute his music.

Atlantic Records signed Sean Paul to the label in 2002. The dancehall hitmaker released several hit albums under the label including his landmark Dutty Rock and his followup The Trinity.
