There is an URGENCY in his song, a FIRE in his delivery and an undeniable WARRIOR SPIRIT as he belts out his demands. To understand his music, one must be familiar with the backstory, set within a landscape that has been dotted with potency, talent and revolution.
Devon
Jorge grew up in “The Garden Parish”, St. Ann, Jamaica, and only nine
miles from “Nine Miles” - Bob Marley’s birthplace - in Claremont. Fellow
parishioners include, the internationally renowned Roots Reggae
Musician and Singer, The Burning Spear and the celebrated founder of The
Black Nationalist Movement, Marcus Garvey. He began singing in church
when he was nine-years-old, moved to Ocho Rios at fifteen and began
working shortly after as a Waiter/Bartender in the hotels. As he
transitioned into adulthood, the burning urge for music continued to
rage. He signed up for lessons.
Devon Jorge migrated to
Connecticut where his insatiable thirst for “the sound” led him to “The
Flex Band”; a Connecticut Tri-State outfit that included Junior Jazz
(now with Third World) and crooner, Glen Washington. He later formed his
own band, “Natural Vibes”, gaining even more exposure through
international and local performances. Gigs at world-renowned hot spots
like BB Kings in Manhattan, Trump Plaza and Hotel Casino and Toad’s
Place in Connecticut have played a huge part in his artistic
development. A master strategist, the next phase found Devon in the
studios voicing a plethora of tracks. Releases like the acclaimed “Cold
Hart”, “Questions”, “Can’t Keep a Good man Down” and Dobie Gray’s “Drift
Away” began to make their way into the hands of club and radio DJs.
Devon Jorge was now a recognized name on the North American circuit.
“Justice”,
his latest release has crashed its way into the Reggae Charts in The
United States and into the psyche of music lovers everywhere. The track
is a timbre of hues, fragranced by social commentary and smothered with a
generous portion of consciousness, spirituality and pride. Jorge’s
incessant wails for “Justice”, as part and parcel of “…peace and love”,
is not only garnering airplay on every continent but is poised to take
him to the next level of a well thought out but sometimes arduous
journey. He says it best! “It’s not the struggle of the journey but the
fulfillment in the end”.
