Rebel Salute 2013

by Curtis Campbell, Gleaner Writer

Roots reggae-oriented festival Rebel Salute is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and the organisers have decided to make it a grand affair. Known to be an event which emphasises good health and preservation of culture, Rebel Salute is setting up to deliver an unrivalled treat to its patrons.

The festival will now last for two days, unlike in previous years, starting this evening and concluding in the early hours of Sunday. In addition, the world renowned festival will now have a new home at Richmond Estate in St Ann.

Tony Rebel and his team are determined to incorporate children into the happenings. The promoter has, therefore, decided to host a Kiddies Village at the venue during the day tomorrow. The intention is to pass down valuable cultural information to the youth through interactive games and book displays.

According to the organisers, Rebel Salute will go beyond the standard variety of children's entertainment offered at most events. "Rebel Salute 2013 will bring a rich blend of traditional and modern activities for children of all ages. Children will delight in intrepid tales by some of the most passionate and animated local storytellers, explore various forms of art and craft, and learn hands-on about some of the newest technologies designed to educate and stretch young minds," they promised.

There will be a cost to indulge in activities such as the bounce-abouts; however, the organisers said it will not be exorbitant. The Kiddies Village will be open to patrons from midday to 6 p.m.

Performers booked to perform at Rebel Salute over the two nights include Beres Hammond, Sizzla, Etana, Chronixx, Busy Signal, The Jolly Boys, Aswad, Luciano, Etana, General Trees, Tarus Riley, Richie Spice, I-Wayne, I-Octane, Leroy Gibbons, Cali P, Louie Culture, Marcia Griffiths, Prezident Brown, Shinehead, Iba Mahr, Singing Melody, Tydal, Lady G, Lone Ranger, Mighty Diamonds, Hopeton James, Errol Dunkley, Little John, Professor Nuts, Courtney Melody, Kabaka Pyramid, Iziniga Ion, Di Blueprint Band, Tony Tuff, Icho Candy, Ras Shiloh, No-Maddz, Chezidek, Hempress Sativa, Rootz Underground, Terror Fabulous, Protoje with Indiggnation, and Davii Honour.

Showtime is 8 p.m. and regular tickets are $2,300 pre-sold and $2,500 at the gate. VIP tickets will carry an additional cost.
