Spanish Reggae
The Music of Panama and Puerto Rico
Spanish Reggae was started in Panama in the late 1970's to early 1980's.
It is now called
reggaeton
thanks to the Puertorican people. Another name for this genre of music is Plena. The name of this genre of music was change from Spanish reggae to reggaeton in the early 1990's due to its coarse lyrics and unvarnished language. This genre has 3-sub genres, they are, Reggae 110, Reggae Bultron and Roman Tic Flow. According to Wikipedia, in 1977 Wassabanga who is a Guyanan by birth was the first DJ to play Spanish music on reggae riddims. In 1980, El General, Nando Boom and friends started recording Spanish lyrics on dancehall riddims. Presently most reggae music lovers of Spanish origin have to listen to reggaeton because everyone consider this to be Spanish dancehall. The Puertorican are now the owners of this genre of music since the mid-1990's. The lyrical contents of the songs are mostly about women, sex and the relations that people from Central America have.
