Gloucester's Reggae Singer Jamie Irie tops the reggae charts

Reggae artist Jamie Irie has reached number one in a specialised chart with his new album.

The 48-year-old released Nah Give Up earlier this month and is delighted to have seen it move from number eight to one in the charts.

He said: “It is just absolutely fantastic. I just think it is amazing and I never expected it to do so well.

“I found out last night and Facebook has gone crazy, it was just lighting up. This is my second time around at trying to crack music.

“Stars are only someone because people support them. Without her fans Beyoncé could be doing dishes.

“I am only as good as those who support me and I need to support from my own people.

“If everyone just brought one track, it would be amazing to see how well it could do.”

Jamie worked on the album throughout 2012 and earlier last year dedicated it to his brother, Mark Saysell, who died of cancer in 2012.

It has reached number one in the Juno download sales chart of ‘roots reggae, lovers rock and one drop’ category.

He has knocked Total Reggae: Dancehall into second spot on the chart, featuring King Kong, Gregory Peck, Shabba Ranks and Half Pint with his floor filler - Tarzan.

During the 1990s Jamie worked with Shaggy and Elephantman.
