Assassin does first ever full reggae album

Jamaica-gleaner

Dancehall-reggae artiste Assassin, aka 'Agent Sasco', finally hosted a listening session for his long-awaited debut reggae album titled The Theory of Reggaetivity.

The artiste, who is now under the guidance of Solid Agency, is known to be a one of the best lyricists of contemporary dancehall music. However, perhaps his clean-cut image and opposition to shock value methods of promotion has hampered his ascension to the top of the dancehall strata, but in any discussion about dancehall's most gifted acts, his name is sure to be mentioned.

That clean-cut image has also worked in his favour, as Assassin is one of the few dancehall artistes still able to travel outside of the island without visa restrictions.

According to Assassin, who has released previous dancehall albums like Infiltration and Gully Sit'n, prior to this project, he feels excited about the final product.

"I'm particularly excited about this project because it's my first full reggae album. I also had the opportunity to work alongside some very talented musicians and the actual making of the album was done in what I consider the true spirit of reggae in which the music is the primary mission - where the vibe leads the process and everyone contributes, understanding that we are a part of something far greater than all of us, and that itself is magical," he said.

The artiste also explained his decision behind calling the album The Theory of Reggaetivity. He says
he has been studying the music in-depth and has worked to ensure that the project embodies the essence of what makes authentic and good reggae music.

"I have been exploring the circumstances around its birth. What are the birth marks and the unique, distinguishing characteristics of the music? I like the idea of a theory because it's a supposition; therefore, it leaves room for improvements and amendments. Like with all learning, it does not propose that one knows all there is to know on the subject; it therefore leaves room for expansion," he said.

LISTENING SESSION

The listening session was held at Villa Ronai in Kingston recently, and the artiste also just wrapped up a European warm-up tour in support of the project. Songs like Country Bus and Day In Day Out are already receiving positive rotation on radio.

In recent times, the deejay has received international success through collaborations with American rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and iconic member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon. The album will be released before the end of 2015.

"It's a serious time for our music, and there are calls for concern and calls to be optimistic. The players who really love this music and want to see it do well, are encouraged to look at what the realities are and take some serious action, and this album is a tool in that process," Assassin told members of the media in a recent interview.
